Yet again, this crazy month of April tossed me another surprise.
A good one. One that made my heart swell.
As most of you beloved blog readers know, I am a Delta Gamma. Loved my collegiate years, but it is these years as an Alumna that find me enjoying and treasuring my beloved fraternal membership even more than ever. Our Panhellenic system at The University of Oklahoma is top notch. Our groups support one another, thrive on working alongside their fellow Panhellenic sisters, and form friendships that reach beyond the greek letters they share. I benefited greatly from our system back in my day and strive to give back to the system that has given me so much!
A few weeks back the current chapter adviser asked me to "go with" the girls to their Awards Ceremony. I have a hard time saying "no" anyday, especially when the letters "D and G" are involved. After racing home from a long day (one of those that you put your makeup on at 5:30 am), I tossed on a jacket, some lipstick and hurried to pick up our collegians. As I wrote programming notes on my program and a to do list for London (I leave soon, people!), I suddenly heard my name as a finalist for Panhellenic Outstanding Alumnae...and I won.
I thought I was there to support the women and see one of our collegians win Top Ten Greek...

...of course, these smart little ladies worked out a plan to have me hook, line and sinker.
I do what I do because I believe in the opportunities we provide and give to our students. I love the possibilities that are born from the creative energy and excitement in our chapters...and most of all the sacred friendships we form. This award is the icing on this sweet piece of life I treasure so. I just had to include a portion of the nomination letter which was read at the 2010 Greek Awards...

"Kate has many accomplishments in the fraternal world but it is her bubbly personality and desire to better our chapter that makes her a valuable alumna. She gives of her time to benefit the women and truly seeks to build relationships with the members in the chapter. She volunteers at the international level and helps Panhellenic every year with recruitment. Kate played a vital role in our chapter’s 90th anniversary and the Panhellenic system’s 100th anniversary. We are thankful for her service to our community and chapter. Please join us in recognizing Kate."

Hi Kate!
I found your blog about a year ago through Kelly's, and I have been amazed to read how much we have in common! I am in my 30s, I too work at my alma mater (University of Kansas) and I am very actively involved with my sorority, Alpha Delta Pi. I could not believe it when I read this post! I just got home from the KU Greek Awards night, and I won the same award that you did! The women even set me up too...exactly the same! So crazy!
Congrats to you!
Sara

Kate, of COURSE we nominated you for the award. I'd like to know who else gives back to Alpha Iota as much as you have and that I'm sure will continue to. Love you!!
